Meta launches Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp subscriptions, with more to come, including AI plans

Meta is significantly expanding its subscription ecosystem. On Wednesday, the social media giant announced the global rollout of consumer subscription plans for its flagship apps—Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp—alongside the initial testing of new subscriptions tailored for businesses, creators, and users of Meta AI. The company frames these offerings as a way to provide power users with enhanced features while simultaneously creating new revenue streams outside of advertising.

For a few dollars per month, consumers can subscribe to Instagram Plus ($3.99/mo), Facebook Plus ($3.99/mo), or WhatsApp Plus ($2.99/mo). Each plan grants access to extra features such as profile customization, super reactions, story insights, and more. Naomi Gleit, Meta's head of product, noted in an announcement that “more fun features” will be added over time. The Plus plans are designed to cater to heavy users and creators who want increased functionality from their social apps, while also allowing Meta to monetize its vast audience of billions, given the limited growth opportunities for these already saturated platforms.

Plus Plans: Detailed Breakdown

Instagram Plus subscribers will gain the ability to see how many people have rewatched their Story in aggregate, create unlimited audience lists for Stories beyond the “Close Friends” option, spotlight a story once a week for extra visibility, extend a story beyond the standard 24 hours, preview a story without appearing as a viewer, and search their story viewer list. Users can also post straight to their profile and highlights without showing up on followers’ feeds. Additional features include Super Heart animated reactions for Stories, custom app icons, customizable fonts for profile bios, and extra pins for their profile. Facebook Plus offers a similar set of features tailored to its platform. WhatsApp Plus, meanwhile, focuses on personalization and messaging enhancements such as app themes, custom ringtones, additional pinned chats, list customization, and premium stickers.

Meta confirmed that these new Plus plans do not replace its existing offering, Meta Verified, which centers on verification, impersonation protection, and extra support. The company said that for now, the older plans remain unchanged, though this could shift in the future.

AI Plans and the Meta One Umbrella

Alongside the consumer Plus plans, Meta is testing two AI-focused subscription tiers under the Meta One brand. The Meta One Plus plan ($7.99/mo) and Meta One Premium plan ($19.99/mo) both unlock additional capabilities for Meta AI. The Premium tier offers higher compute capacity for complex queries, enabling deeper reasoning and “thinking mode” in the Meta AI app or web interface. It also provides more video and image-generation options across Meta’s apps. Meta AI will remain free for casual users, but these plans follow the path set by other AI model providers that charge for extra compute and higher usage. The AI plans will begin testing next month in Singapore, Guatemala, and Bolivia, and will later expand with benefits for users of Meta’s AI glasses.

Plans for Creators and Businesses

Meta is also testing professional plans for creators and businesses. The Meta One Essential plan ($14.99/mo) includes the Verified badge, impersonation protection, and an enhanced linksheet for linking to online presence across social channels and the web. The more expensive Meta One Advanced plan ($49.99/mo) adds benefits such as being featured in the Facebook feed, appearing higher in Facebook and Instagram search results, a bold “Follow” button on Reels, and automatic “follow” invitations sent to users who engage with content. Advanced subscribers can also drive traffic to their website or shop through links in Instagram posts and Reels, and get enhanced profiles with expanded linksheets. These plans include better analytics, competitive insights on Instagram, custom audience insights on Facebook, optimized scheduling tools, shared access for account moderators, and notifications when others reuse content so that credit can be requested.

Gleit acknowledged that Meta is still experimenting with these AI and professional plans but aims to bring them all together under Meta One, where they will continue to evolve and expand over time.

Strategic Context and Industry Implications

Meta’s move toward subscriptions comes as the company faces slowing growth in its core advertising business and increasing regulatory scrutiny over data privacy and market dominance. By offering paid tiers, Meta can generate recurring revenue from its most engaged users while also enhancing user loyalty and reducing dependence on ad impressions. The AI subscription plans in particular reflect the broader industry trend of charging for premium AI features, as seen with OpenAI, Google, and others. Additionally, the professional plans signal Meta’s intent to deepen its relationship with creators and small businesses, who are increasingly vital to the platform’s ecosystem. The global rollout of the Plus plans begins immediately, while the AI and professional plans will be tested in select markets before wider release. Meta will continue to monitor user feedback and adjust pricing and features accordingly. The company has not disclosed projected revenue from subscriptions, but analysts view them as a small but growing component of Meta’s overall income. With more than 3 billion monthly active users across its apps, even a modest conversion rate could yield significant returns. The subscription model also helps Meta comply with evolving digital regulations in Europe and elsewhere, where paid alternatives to ad-supported services are sometimes mandated. As competition from TikTok, YouTube, and other platforms intensifies, Meta’s subscription push may also serve as a differentiation strategy, offering exclusive features that cannot be replicated elsewhere. The coming months will reveal how consumers and creators respond to these new options, and whether Meta’s subscription ambitions will reshape the social media landscape.
